Chromebook: Using Your Rowan Managed Device

Standard Rowan Configurations for All Chromebooks

Employees and students who are logged in to Chromebooks with a Rowan University email address will notice several Rowan configurations, including:

These changes apply to both Rowan University-owned Chromebooks and personal Chromebooks when logging in to the device with a Rowan University email address. Students or employees who are using personal Chromebooks and do not want these changes applied to their device may log in with a personal Gmail account.

When students and employees log in to a Chromebook with their Rowan University email address, you will see "Device managed by students.rowan.edu" below the password field on the login screen. For general information about using a Chromebook, please see Google's "How to Chromebook" page.

Log in to your Chromebook

Turn on the Chromebook by pressing the power button located above the backspace button. It will boot up to a “Sign in to your Chromebook” screen.

Before you can sign in you will need to connect to a wireless network:

  1. At the bottom right of your screen on the taskbar, click the time.
  2. Click the "Not connected" wireless icon



    Note: If you see your Wi-Fi network name and a signal strength, your Chromebook is already connected to Wi-Fi.
  3. Turn on Wi-Fi.
  4. Your Chromebook will automatically look for available networks and show them to you in a list.
  5. Select your Wifi network, click connect, and enter the Wifi password

Once connected to Wifi enter your Rowan email address and password. If it is your first time signing in,  you will be redirected to the Rowan Single Sign on screen. Enter your credentials, press enter and then complete your DUO two-factor authentication.

You should now be logged into your Chromebook.

Log in as Another Rowan User

  1. Turn on the Chromebook by pressing the power button located above the backspace button.
  2. On the account screen that's displayed, click Add Person at the bottom of the page.
  3. Enter your Rowan email address and password.
  4. Enter your Rowan credentials (username and password) on the Rowan Single Sign on screen.
  5. Complete your DUO two-factor authentication.

Log out of Your Chromebook

  1. At the bottom right of your screen on the taskbar, select the time.
  2. Click Sign out to logout or select the power button to shut down.

Accessing a Rowan Virtual Desktop

  1. Click the Citrix Workspace icon in your dock at the bottom of the screen. 
  2. Sign in with your Rowan username and password. Note: You don’t need to enter your full email address. Use smith, not smith@rowan.edu, for example.
  3. Complete the DUO two-factor authentication and select the desktop you would like to access.

Using WebEx

  1. Open Chrome from the task bar at the bottom of your screen 
  2. Near the top of your Chrome window you will find a bookmark folder labelled "Rowan Managed Bookmarks."
  3. Select this folder and click Webex Conferencing.
  4. Enter meeting information to join a meeting or sign-in with your Rowan username and password to host your own meeting. Please see http://go.rowan.edu/webex for more information about using Webex.

Access Home (H:) or Common (O:) Shared Drives

ExpanDrive is not supported for Chromebooks. The recommended way to access your files is to connect to your Rowan virtual desktop as described above. You can either work with your files directly from the virtual desktop or copy them to Google Drive and access them directly from your Chromebook. Please see Google documentation for more details and instructions on uploading files to Google Drive.

Using Jabber

On A Rowan Account:

  1. Click the small circle icon in the button left hand corner and the search for "Jabber"
  2. Click the Icon, accept the terms of Use, and follow the prompts to go through the introduction and give Jabber permissions
  3. At the login screen enter your full email and click continue. Note: you may need to click the "sign-in" button twice
  4. Enter your password and you should be logged in

 

Non-Rowan Accounts:

This is not officially supported on unmanaged Chromebooks and is not supported by Google on all Chromebook models:
