As Rowan moves away from software-based encryption, you may want to decrypt files protected by Symantec Removable Media Encryption. You can do so using the steps below if Symantec Endpoint Encryption (SEE) is still installed on your computer.
Determine SEE Availability
The easiest way to determine if SEE is still installed on your Rowan device is by searching for it from the start menu. If you select the Windows (Start) button and type SEE, it should return a program called SEE Management Agent. If that app is shown, then you still have SEE installed. If the search doesn't return that app, then SEE is not on the computer, and you should follow these steps for non-SEE decryption.
Decrypt With SEE
If SEE is installed, you will have the option to right click on the file or folder that is encrypted and select the option to Decrypt. This will leave the file on the drive, but it will no longer be protected or encrypted.
To decrypt:
- Open File Explorer and select your flash drive
- Right click the file or folder you want to decrypt and select Symantec Encryption > Decrypt
- Your file is now decrypted, and you can move it to the appropriate storage option.
Decrypt Without SEE
In order to access encrypted files on a machine without SEE installed:
- Plug the portable storage device in and open the RemovableMediaAccessUtility file
- From the Removable Media Access Utility window, double click on your encrypted file or files in order to view them.
- You'll be prompted for the default password you set earlier to open the file. Enter the password and select OK to continue.
