Overview

Canvas course shells for Rowan Online and Main campus On-the-Ground courses become available to students five days before the course Banner start date and remain available to students for 90 days after the Banner course end date.

After a course has ended (Banner end date +90 days) instructors still have the ability to access the Canvas course shell but will be unable to make any adjustments, updates, or entries in the Gradebook.

Confirm Course Shell Availability

Instructors can confirm when student access to the Canvas course shell starts and ends by:

  1. Logging into the course.

  2. Clicking on Settings in the course navigation menu.

  3. Review the course Start and End dates.

Reopening a Course Shell

Canvas course shells may be reopened for students who have been granted an incomplete. Once a course shell has been reopened the student will be able to submit outstanding work and the instructor will have the ability to make changes to the gradebook.

To reopen a course for an incomplete, the instructor of record must submit a request to the Technology Support Center at support.rowan.edu.

Please be aware of the following when submitting your request:

  • Student access to a reopened shell cannot be limited to only those with an incomplete.
Reopened course shells are available to all students enrolled in the course. If a course is part of a crosslisting, all students in all sections of the crosslist will have access to the reopened course.

  • Policy allows for course access to be reopened/extended until the end of the following term.
For example: A Fall course will be reopened until the end of the following Spring term. A Spring course will be reopened until the end of the following Fall term.
