Duo: Log In Using Two-Factor Authentication

This document provides instructions for using Duo two-factor authentication when logging in to Rowan applications and websites. There are several ways you can verify your identity with two-factor authentication. We recommend setting up Duo Mobile on your phone, as it's the fastest, easiest and most secure method.

Duo Login Prompt

Authentication Options

Depending on what type of device you enroll, you will see up to three options on the Duo login prompt:

"Remember Me"
Option

Select the Remember me for 14 days checkbox at the bottom of the Duo login prompt on a trusted computer to bypass Duo for 14 days in that specific internet browser, such as Chrome, Safari, IE, Firefox. This feature requires browser cookies. If you use a different internet browser, or switch computers, you will be prompted again by Duo.

NOTE: EMR users accessing Citrix through access.rowan.edu will only be able to remember their login for 1 day.

Send me a Push

If you have the Duo Mobile app installed on your enrolled mobile device you can click Send Me a Push on the Duo prompt.

Duo will immediately send a notification to your mobile device. Depending on how you have notifications set up, you may need to open the notification.

On your device, tap Approve to approve the login.

If you receive a push notification that you did not initiate, tap Deny, then tap It's unusual - I'm not sure I should approve it.

If you want to cancel the push, click the blue Cancel button that appears on the login screen.

Receive a Phone Call

If you have enrolled a landline phone number or cellular device, you can click Call Me on the Duo prompt.

Duo will immediately call the number you enrolled. Answer the call on your phone, and press 1 to approve the login. If you receive a Duo authentication phone call that you did not initiate, press 9 to report fraud.

If you want to cancel the phone call, click the blue Cancel button that appears on the login screen when the call is being made.

Enter a Passcode

Click Enter a Passcode on the Duo prompt. A passcode can be generated by the Duo Mobile app, a hardware token, sent via text message or an emergency bypass code obtained from Rowan NetID.

Instructions for each method can be found below.

Generate a Passcode with the Duo Mobile App

You don't need WiFi or cellular connectivity to generate a passcode with the Duo Mobile app. This feature works even if your device is in Airplane mode.

  1. Open the Duo Mobile app on your device.
  2. In the app, tap the key icon.
  3. A six-digit passcode displays in the app.

  4. To log in on your computer, click the Enter a Passcode button, then enter the passcode in the passcode field, and click Log In.

Get a Passcode Via Text Message

Click the Enter a Passcode button and then select the blue Text me new codes button at the bottom of the window.

Duo will immediately send a text message containing a passcode to your enrolled mobile device.

In the Duo prompt on your computer, enter the passcode in the field and click Log In.

Duo Hardware Token Passcode

Click the Enter a Passcode button on the Duo prompt.
Tap the green button on your Duo hardware token to display a six-digit passcode.

Enter the passcode and click Log In.

If the Duo login screen displays “Incorrect passcode. Please try again” after entering the correct code from a hardware token, it may mean that your hardware token is out of sync. Please see our FAQs article for help

Temporary Bypass Code

If you don't have any of your Duo devices available to you, you can generate a temporary bypass code on Rowan NetID to use with Duo.
