Cross-listing is a self-elective system that allows instructors to merge two or more course sections into a single course shell in Canvas. Cross-listing creates a primary course shell and all sections are added to it. Student enrollments from individual sections are automatically added to the primary course shell.
The functions and limitations of the cross-listing tool are:
- You must be the instructor of record in Banner and Section Tally to request a cross-list.
- You can request a cross-list 30 days before the start of the semester.
- Courses are automatically published 5 days before the semester start date mentioned in Banner. You must submit your cross-list requests before the courses are auto-published.
- You must request to cross-list all sections of a course or multiple courses at the same time. You cannot add additional sections to an existing cross-listing request.
- Once a section or a course is cross-listed, you cannot cross-list that section or course into another course.
- You must request a cross-list for each set of courses separately
- You cannot cross-list the courses that are already published in Canvas.
To request a cross-list:
- Navigate to the Rowan Online Learning portal.
- Click LOG IN, enter your Rowan NetID and Password, and click Login.
- Navigate to My Courses.
- Go to the Cross-List Courses Tab.
- Select the required term from the Select a Term dropdown menu and click the Apply button.
The list of courses for the selected term will appear. The Shell Created label indicates that the course shell is already created. - Select the checkbox next to the courses you wish to cross-list and click the Cross-list Courses button.
- On the next screen:
- Select the primary course from the drop down menu.
- Select how you would like the shell created from the drop-down menu:
- Create an empty course shell from the standard template: this option allows you to create and build course content using the Rowan Online course template. You must use the standard template for syllabus, bio, and course structure.
- Copy content from another course that I have taught in Canvas: this option allows you to choose a course from a previous semester to copy content and modify the content as required. You can only copy content from the courses that you are the instructor of record in Banner and Section Tally.
- Click Cross-list Courses button. If you make an incorrect choice select the Go Back button for confirming.
This is a final action and CANNOT be undone for any reason. - You will receive a confirmation message.
The cross-list request is created and will be processed by Rowan Online within 10 business days of submission.
- Select the primary course from the drop down menu.
Notes:
- Please allow up to 24 hours for primary and child section course enrollments to update once your Canvas cross-list is approved.
- If you have not created a course shell before requesting a cross-list, cross-listing multiple sections creates a parent course shell with enrollments from Banner and is available on your Canvas Dashboard.
