As an instructor of record in Banner and Section Tally, you can create course shells using the Rowan Online portal 30 days before the start of the semester. Course shells are automatically published and are available to students 5 days before the start of the semester. Note that you can only create course shells for Face-to-Face courses and must contact the assigned Instructional Designer for Online and Hybrid courses. If you do not create the Canvas shell, it will not be published in Canvas.
To create a course shell:
- Navigate to the Rowan Online portal.
- Click LOG IN, enter your Rowan NetID and Password, and click Login.
- Expand the top right menu, click My Courses.

- Create an empty course shell from the standard template: this option allows you to create and build course content using the Rowan Online course template. You must use the standard template for syllabus, bio, and course structure.
- Copy content from another course that I have taught in Canvas: this option allows you to choose a course from a previous semester to copy content and modify the content as required. You can only copy content from the courses that you are the instructor of record in Banner and Section Tally.
- Click Create Course Shell. The course shell is created and is available in Canvas. You can access course shell either by logging in to Rowan instance of Canvas or by logging in to the Online Learning portal, and expanding the top right menu, then click Dashboard > Access your courses in Canvas.
Notes:

- If you choose to copy course content, it may take up to 24 hours for the content to appear in your course shell. You will receive an email notification when the course copy is completed.
- If you did not choose to copy course content while creating a course shell, you must use the Canvas Commons system to manage the copy process.
- Instructors creating course shells for the first time are auto-enrolled in the Self-Paced Canvas Training course. You can access this course from your Canvas dashboard. The course provides instructions for using the course template and other tools and features of Canvas.
