Employees and students can access their Home Directory and Openarea, as well as a large number of applications, remotely through Rowan virtual desktops.

In some cases, the Rowan VPN can be used to access the openarea and your home directory from off-campus if a virtual desktop does not meet your needs.

Faculty, staff, and students are eligible to request VPN access. Each request for VPN access is reviewed to ensure the use case justification is appropriate for VPN service access and that the user has completed all required Security Awareness training prior to being approved for VPN service.

To access your home directory or Open area on campus, please see:  Home Directory and Openarea: Access From On Campus

To request access to the VPN:

  1. Complete your required Security Awareness Training
  2. Submit a request for VPN access in the IRT Support Portal.

Once your request for access has been granted, please see our article on getting started with the VPN for more information including installing the Cisco AnyConnect Client and logging in to the Rowan VPN.

Accessing Your Home Directory and Openarea:

Windows

If you know the full path to the subfolder you wish to access, entering that information will allow you to connect much more quickly. For example: \\rowanads.rowan.edu\common\openarea\COB.

Mac

If you know the full path to the subfolder you wish to access, entering that information will allow you to connect much more quickly. For example: smb://rowanads.rowan.edu/common/openarea/COB.

Upon entering your username and password, you may notice a Finder window appear but the openarea is empty. Please give it a few seconds to populate the directory. The openarea will then appear with the folders in the directory. Going into a folder immediately may show the folder as being empty. Please wait up to a minute for the Finder window to enumerate the folders. They will turn into Volume drives once it is complete. Going into subfolders from then on should behave normally.
