Google Drive for desktop (formerly File Stream) is an application that allows you to quickly access all of your Google Drive files on demand, directly from your computer, meaning you use almost none of your hard drive space and spend less time waiting for files to sync.
We encourage you to use Drive for desktop as it lets you access My Drive and Team Drive files directly from the cloud, which in turn:
- Frees up disk space and network bandwidth
- Decreases sync time
- Minimizes the amount of university data stored on users' hard drives
You can also make Drive files available for offline access. These cached files sync back to the cloud when you're online, so the latest version is available on all your devices.
Download the Drive For Desktop Client (This application is available exclusively to Google Apps for Education clients and the link will only work if you are logged in to Google with your Rowan account)
Important things to note:
- Shared Drive contributors won't be able to edit their Shared Drive files when they're opened in Drive for desktop; they'll only be able to view them. To edit these files, they'll need to open them in Drive on the web. For more information on Shared Drives please visit https://gsuite.google.com/learning-center/products/drive/get-started-team-drive/
