The Outlook app is designed to enable you to do more from your mobile device by bringing together email, calendar, contacts, and other files.
The Microsoft Outlook Mobile app is the only supported way of accessing your Exchange email on a mobile device at Rowan University. If you choose to use an email app that IRT does not provide technical support for, you can find instructions for the iOS App and Android email app on the Microsoft website
Outlook Mobile App:
- iOS
- Install the Outlook Mobile App (you will need a valid Apple ID)
- Create a New Account (Create a new account or add an additional account in the mobile app.)
- Android
- Install the Outlook Mobile App
- Create a New Account (Create a new account or add an additional account in the mobile app.)
- Enable Contact Syncing
- Turn the "Organize by Thread" setting on or off
- Turn the "Focused Inbox" on or off
- Remove and Re-Add your Account

Install the Outlook Mobile App on iOS
If you are currently receiving email on your mobile device, remove your current email account (not the app) from the app you are using (iOS Mail, Android Mail, etc.) before installing the Outlook app
Install the Microsoft Outlook app from the App Store on an iPhone/iPad. You may also access the download directly from Microsoft.
NOTE: Please ensure you have the latest version of the Outlook app. Some phones come with this preinstalled and the app isn't up to date. You can check this by going to the App Store, searching for the Outlook app, and selecting "update" in the top right.
Follow your device's instructions to initiate the installation.
Make a New Account on iOS
Create a new account or add an additional account in the mobile app.
1. Open the Outlook app.
2. Enter your Rowan email address and select Add Account.
3. Enter your Rowan network password and select "Sign in."
4. Complete your DUO two-factor authentication and select "Trust this Browser" if prompted.
Contact Syncing may not be on by default. Please follow these steps to enable it:
- Click the "hamburger menu" in the upper left corner.
- Click the "Settings" gear icon in the lower left corner.
- Select your Exchange account.
- Move the "Save Contacts" slider to turn it on.
Install the Outlook Mobile App on Android

Make a New Account on Android
Create a new account or add an additional account in the mobile app.
1. Open the Outlook app.
2. Select "Add Account"
3. Enter your Rowan email address and select "Continue."
4. Enter your Rowan network password and select "Sign in."
5. Complete your DUO two-factor authentication and select "Trust this Browser" if prompted.
Contact Syncing may not be on by default. Please follow these steps to enable it:
- Select the round "picture" icon in the upper left corner and then the "Settings" gear icon in the bottom left.
- Select your Exchange account.
- Move the "Sync Contacts" slider to turn it on.
If your contacts don't begin to sync automatically after installing the Outlook app, please make the Outlook app is in the foreground of your device. Contacts will only begin to sync when the Outlook app is active in memory.
If your contacts still aren't syncing, make sure "Save contacts (iOS)" or "Sync Contacts (Android)" is enabled:
- In the Outlook app, click the "hamburger menu" in the upper left on iOS or the picture/initials icon in the upper left on Android.
- Select the Settings gear icon in the lower left
- Select the account that is not syncing
- Turn on Sync/Save contacts
- Select Reset Account and check to see if your contacts are now syncing.
Turn the "Organize by Thread" setting on or off
By default, your inbox is initially organized by thread.
Organizing mail by "thread" arranges messages as conversational threads based on the message Subject.
- In the Outlook app, click the "hamburger menu" in the upper left on iOS or the picture/initials icon in the upper left on Android.
- Select the Settings gear icon
- Scroll down to Organize mail by thread
- Select the button to toggle the setting on or off.
Turn the "Focused Inbox" on or off
Focused Inbox separates your inbox into two tabs—Focused and Other. Your most important emails are on the Focused tab while the rest remain accessible on the Other tab.
Focused Inbox is on by default. To turn it off:
- In the Outlook app, click the "hamburger menu" in the upper left on iOS or the picture/initials icon in the upper left on Android.
- Select the Settings gear icon
- Scroll down to Focused Inbox then tap the button to toggle the setting on or off.
Remove and Re-Add Your Account
If your email isn't working in the Outlook Mobile App after being migrated to Exchange Online, you may need to remove and re-add your account.
You can use the written instructions here or view our quick video. You will not lose any email by removing your current account. All of your email is stored in the cloud and will be re-download to the app once the account is re-added.
To remove an existing Exchange email account:
- In the Outlook app, click the "hamburger menu" in the upper left on iOS or the picture/initials icon in the upper left on Android.
- At the bottom of the screen on the left, choose the Settings gear icon.
- Select the account to remove.
- Scroll down and select Delete Account, and then Delete. You may also get a prompt to remove data. Continue with the deletion.
- Re-add your account using the instructions above to create a new account for either iOS or Android.
