As an instructor of record in Banner and Section Tally, you can create course shells using the Rowan Online Learning Portal 30 days before the start of the semester. Course shells are automatically published and available to students 5 days before the start of the semester. You can only create course shells for Face-to-Face courses and must contact the assigned Instructional Designer for Online and Hybrid courses. If you do not create the Canvas shell, it will not be published in Canvas.

To create a course shell:

  1. Navigate to the Rowan Online Learning Portal.

  2. Click LOG IN, enter your Rowan NetID and Password, and click Login.

  3. Navigate to My Courses.
    Select My Courses

  4. Go to the Create Course Shell tab.
    Create Course Shell Tab
  5. Select the required term from the Select a Term dropdown menu and click the Apply button.
    Select Term

The list of courses for the selected term will appear. The Shell Created label indicates that the course shell is already created.

  6. Select the radio button next to the course you want to create the Canvas course shell for, then click the Create Course Shell button.

  7. On the next screen, select how you would like the shell created from the drop-down menu:
    Create Shell Options

    • Create an empty course shell from the standard template: This option allows you to create and build course content using the Rowan Online Learning course template. You must use the standard template for syllabus, bio, and course structure.
    • Copy content from another course that I have taught in Canvas: this option allows you to choose a course from a previous semester to copy content and modify the content as required. You can only copy content from the courses for which you are the instructor of record in Banner and Section Tally.

  8. Click the Create Course Shell button.

  9. You will receive a confirmation message.

You can access the course shell either by logging in to Rowan's instance of Canvas or by logging in to the Rowan Online Learning Portal and clicking Access your courses in Canvas from the Dashboard.
