IDEA Student Ratings of Instruction (SRI) by Anthology

The IDEA Student Ratings of Instruction (SRI) by Anthology is one of the instruments departments may ask faculty to use to obtain summative and formative student feedback.

Faculty can orient themselves to the faculty and student experiences by watching these orientation videos:

Opt In

Faculty members log into the Anthology IDEA Opt-In Form from the link in the Faculty and Advising tab in Self-Service Banner using their Rowan network account.  Once the instructor is logged in, they will see a list of all CRNs for the sections they are assigned that are currently in session.  To opt-in, they must check the checkboxes next to the CRNs they would like included and submit.

Faculty Dashboard

Faculty have access to their personal Faculty Dashboard that displays real-time response rates, course evaluation reports, and course roster information.

To access the Faculty Dashboard:

Adjusting Learning Objectives

Not all 13 objectives are relevant to all courses. Each objective can be weighted as:

E = Essential: Included in the mean with weighting of 2

I = Important: Included in the mean with weighting of 1

M = Minor: NOT included in the mean

Your department has selected three (3) or more objectives as E or I for you. You may increase (but NOT decrease) the importance of each of the 13 objectives. Stay within the recommended three to five (3-5) total objectives listed as E or I.

Objective weightings may only be increased before the survey END date.

Note: Faculty new to the IDEA survey are highly encouraged to review the Information from IDEA about selecting objectives document BEFORE increasing the objectives for their course surveys.

In the Faculty Dashboard, select the "OSF Manager" tab. You may copy objectives from one section to another.  To see a previous section, choose it from the drop-down menu under "Compare a Section". Repeat the process for each course section.

Student Access

Set aside about 15 minutes of class time for students to complete the survey.

Students can access the survey through their Canvas course. Just make sure that the green checkbox is selected next to the link, indicating it is published.

You can also access the direct access link via the Faculty Dashboard under the View Evaluation link.

Email the students the direct access link.  Students will log in to their Student Dashboard (using this link) with their Rowan University credentials (ID and password) to complete the survey.

CAUTION: This will give students access to all of their course evaluations, not just your class.

The IDEA SRI powered by Anthology is completely mobile responsive (so students can use their cell phones).

Students will receive email reminders to complete their surveys. Even so, class reminders are very helpful for students who were not present that day.

Monitor Student Response Rates

You can access "real time" response rates for your course evaluations through your Faculty Dashboard (Please view the Evaluation Reports section for more information about interpreting results).

Evaluation Reports

The reports of the IDEA Student Ratings of Instruction (SRI) provide rich data that may be used by faculty as part of their tenure or recontracting packet or to inform their own teaching.

How it Works

You can access your reports by logging in to the Faculty Dashboard.

Once you are on the home page, you can view your students' response rates.  The response rates will be listed by term, then by course.

Click on the tabs to toggle between "Quantitative" and "Qualitative" data.

The Report Status column indicates if the report is available to view.

Box 1: Summary of other two boxes.

Box 2:  Select the Progress on Relevant Objectives heading for a detailed summary with graphs of relevant (chosen) objectives and drop-down menus to toggle between:

Note: Data from at least two semesters must be present before the Your Institution and Your Discipline features are available

Box 3: Ratings of Summative Questions: Students' overall opinions about course and teacher.

Student Response System (SRS) Tool

The SRS tool is intended for quick, on-the-spot data collection and review. It is a formative assessment tool that allows you to embed direct measures of learning into various learning experiences. Students can access short quizzes on their devices. Results are viewable immediately, allowing instructors to adjust lessons and provide instant feedback.

How It Works

The SRS tool builds a survey with instructor-made questions, then provides students with the Connect ID number.  If you would rather build a survey using standardized questions developed from IDEA's research, then use the Feedback Tool Guide.

The Instructor Experience

To access the SRS sessions, select the "Response Sessions" tab at the top of the Faculty Dashboard.  This is where all SRS Sessions are stored for reference.

The five-digit Connect ID number is listed on the top of the page in orange.  This number is associated with the instructor and will not change.

To create a new session, you will select the blue Create a Session button.

You will then name the session by clicking on the gray words "Untitled Session" and typing in the name.

Feedback Tool

The Feedback Tool allows instructors to receive formative feedback from students throughout the semester.  Feedback sessions include six (6) questions related to high impact teaching practices and a single question that gauges the students' overall perception of the materials covered.

How it Works

This tool has six (6) standardized questions (that cannot be edited) developed from IDEA's research on teaching essentials. These provide formative feedback about teaching methods that are highly correlated with instructor and course excellence. Additionally, one question asks students, "Did you understand the material covered today?" (Feedback Tool Questions)

If you would rather build a survey with instructor-made questions, then use the Student Response System Guide.

The Instructor Experience

You can start a feedback session by logging in to the Faculty Dashboard and selecting the "Feedback" button at the top of the page.

Near the bottom of the page, select the Start button for the desired section.

You will provide the students with the feedback session link: https://rowan.campuslabs.com/feedback.  The session will be open for two hours after it is started. You can end the session early by selecting the Stop button.

Only the instructors can see the results of the feedback.

The Student Experience

Students can access from any device that connects to the Internet.

Students have two hours to complete, or until you close the session.

If a student types a name, the feedback results will NOT be anonymous and you will see the name associated with the results. If a student wishes to remain anonymous, the letter "X" may be typed in the name field (the name field is required, so something must be entered).
